Histology of salivary glands and tonsils Flashcards
A microscopic view
Name the 2 types of glands and state there function
- Endocrine glands: Mainly secretes hormones, no ducts present, secreted from basal lamina
- Exocrine glands: Secrete non-hormones, uses a duct system
State the 3 groups of exocrine glands
- Merocrine/ Eccrine- secretion from vesicles
- Apocrine- pinched off, portion of cell is the secretion
- Holocrine- mature cell dies and becomes secretory product
HAM
Which category of secretory products is viscous and has carbohydrate rich products?
Mucous Glands
Serous Glands are
Watery and has protein rich products
Which category of secretory products has lipid products
Oil glands
Describe salivary glands
Compound, tubuloacinar, merocrine, exocrine glands whose ducts open into the oral cavity.
Function of Salivary Glands
Produces saliva to keep oral cavity moist and aid in digestion;
protection of microbes due to the presence if immunoglobin A
What are the major salivary glands?
- Parotid
- Submandibular
- Sublingual
Where does secretory elements come from in the pathway of secretion
Portio terminalis or end pieces
What are the steps for the pathway of secretion
Step 1: Secretory elements come from portio terminalis
Step 2: Then leads into series of intercalated disc
Step 3: Then lead to striated ducts
Step 4: Then lead to excretory duct
Step 5: Released into oral cavity
Which cell type stains darkly due to Zymogen Granules
Serous (rounded nuclei towards base)
How does mucous cells stain and why
Stains lightly; appears empty
flattened nuclei towards base
Which gland is entirely serous
Parotid glands
What type of cells does the submandibular gland contain
Serous and mucous (mixed)
Which gland contains mucous cells
Sublingual gland
What are Demilunes?
Crescent shaped cells attached to outer border of mucous acini
Functions of Demilunes
Secrete lysozymes which break down bacterial wall
Offers antibacterial protection to oral cavity
What type of cells are Demilunes
Serous secreting cells
Name the types of tonsils
Palatine tonsil
Pharyngeal tonsil
Lingual tonsil
tubal tonsil
What is the function of tonsils
forms the initial immunologic defense to inhaled or ingested pathogens
Tonsils have the largest collection of lymphatic drainage. True or False?
True
What type of epithelium lines the oral surface of the tonsils (palatine tonsil)
Stratified squamous non-keratinizing epithelium
What type of epithelium lines the Pharyngeal tonsil?
Pseudostratified ciliated cuboidal epithelium
What type of epithelium lines the Lingual tonsil?
Stratified squamous epithelium
Wat distinguishes the lingual tonsil from the palatine and pharyngeal tonsils on a histological slide
The presence of salivary glands
Which type of tonsil has the most dense connective tissue
Palatine tonsil
What is tonsilitis and why does it occur
Tonsilitis is the swelling of the tonsils due to a bacterial or viral infection.
