Histology Male Repro Flashcards
What are the essential organs of the repro system?
The gonads
How many chromosomes are present in the games?
23
In the male reproductive system, there are seven passageways. These include (in order from proximal to distal):
straight tubule, rete testis, efferent ductules, epididymis, vas deferens, ejactulatory duct, urethra
The three accessory glands of the male repro system include:
seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbourethral glands
The endocrine hormone of the testes is:
testosterone (steroidogenesis)
the exocrine hormone of the testes is:
sperm
The three steps of spermatocytogenesis are:
spermatagonia –> spermatocyte –> spermatozoa
The two phases of spermatogenesis include:
spermatocytogenesis (formation phase) & spermiogenesis (maturation phase)
How many degrees C cooler are the contents of the scrotum than the rest of the body?
3
True or False: The testes originate retroperotineal
true
Seminiferous tubules are lined by what type of EPITHELIUM?
complex stratified
Two types of cells found in seminiferous tubules include:
Sertoli cells (aka supporting cells) & spermatogenic cells (these include spermatogonia, spermatocytes, and spermatids)
What are the three types of spermatogonia?
Type A dark, type A pale, type B
What are the three types of intratesticular ducts?
straight tubules (short straight tubes lined with Sertoli cells), rete testis (interconnected network of channels lined with cuboidal epithelium or low columnar epithelium with underlying dense connective tissue), efferent ductules (lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium with groups of nonciliated cuboidal cells with microvilli alternating with groups of taller ciliated cells)
Describe the makeup of straight tubules
straight tubules are lined with Sertoli cells and at the very end switch to cuboidal epithelium with an underlying dense connective tissue
Describe the makeup of the rete testis
the rete testis are an interconnected network of channels lined with cuboidal epithelium or low columbar epithelium with underlying dense connective tissue; cells have a single apical cilium and relatively few short apical microvilli
Describe the makeup of the efferent ductules
the efferent ductules are lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium with groups of nonciliated cuboidal cells with microvilli alternating with groups of taller ciliated cells; some circulatory oriented smooth muscle cells can be found around these ducts
What type of cells line the epididymis?
pseudostratified columnar epithelium composed of rounded basal cells and columnar cells with stereocilia; surrounded by smooth muscle cells
What is the approx length of the epididymis?
4-5m
What is the role of the epididymis?
its role is to store and complete maturation of sperm cells
Describe the lining of the vas deferens
the vas deferens is lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium with sparse stereocilia; muscularis layer has three layers of smooth muscle
Name the two divisions of the vas deferens
ampulla and ejeculatory duct
What is the part of the vas deferens within the prostate gland called?
the ejaculatory duct
True or false: the ejaculatory duct has a double folded muscular layer.
false. the ejaculatory duct has no muscular layer
Name the three divisions of the male urethra
prostatic, membranous, spongy
Describe the cellular lining of the seminal vesicles
simple columnar epithelium or pseudostratified columnar epithelium rich in secretory granules
Describe the deeper lining of the seminal vesicles
they have a smooth muscle in an inner circular and outer longitudinal arrangement
What does the seminal vesicle join with to form the ejaculatory duct?
the ampulla of the vas deferens
How many tuboalveolar glands make up the prostate gland?
30-50
The prostate gland is covered by a _____ _____
fibroelastic capsule
The bulbourethral gland is also known as
Cowper’s gland
The bulbourethral gland is lined with:
mucous-secreting simple columnar epithelium
