Histology Female Repro Flashcards
What are the six external organs of the female repro system?
mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, external urethral orifice, vaginal orifice
What are the two endocrine products of the ovaries
estrogen, progesterone
What is the role of the estrogen produced in the ovary?
it promotes the growth and maturation of internal and external sex organs; promotes cyclic changes in uterine mucosa; development of secondary female sex characteristics such as breast development
What is the role of progesterone produced in the ovary?
progesterone prepares the internal sex organs (primarily the uterus) for pregnancy by promoting changes in endometrium; preparing mammary glands for function
What is the exocrine product of the ovary?
oocyte
Ovarian follicles are found within the _____ of the ovaries
cortex
An ovarian follicle is composed of what?
an oocyte surrounded by one or more layers of epithelial cells
What are the three basic types of ovarian follicles?
1) primordial, 2) growing (further divided into primary and secondary), 3) mature (Graafian)
How many ovarian follicles are present in the fetus?
5 million
How many ovarian follicles are present in a female at birth?
600,000 to 800,000
How many ovarian follicles are present at the beginning of puberty?
300,000
How many ovarian follicles are ovulated?
400
Theca folliculi (follicular theca) is the sheath of _____ _____ cells that develop from what?
connective tissue, stromal cells surrounding the developing follicle
Theca folliculi are found where?
just external to the basal lamina
The theca folliculi differentiates into two parts:
theca interna (cuboidal secretory cells, in response to LH, synthesize and secrete androgens, endocrine function), theca externa (fibrous outer portion, smooth muscle cells, fibronlast, bundles of collagen)
What are the two cells of the corpus luteum?
Granulosa lutein cells and theca lutein cells
Briefly describe the properties of granulosa lutein cells
they are 30um in diameter, are centrall located, derived from granulosa cells, and begin to produce progesterone
Briefly describe theca lutein cells
15um in diameter, perpherally located cells, derived from cells of the theca internal, are slightly darker staining than granulosa lutein cells, and continue to produce entrogen
What are the 6 steps of follicular development?
1) primordial 2) primary 3) secondary 4) vescicular 5) corpus luteum 6) corpus albicans
Approx how long are fallopian tubes?
12 cm
Where does fertilization of the egg take place?
in the uterine/fallopian tubes
The wall of the uterine tubes of comprised of:
folded mucosa with simple columnar epithelium, a thick muscularis, and serosa
The two types of cells of the uterine tubes include:
ciliated cells (move oocyte) and secretory cells (darker staining, produce nutrive fluid covering epithelium)
What are the three layers of the uterus from inside to outside?
endometrium (simple columnar with both ciliated and secretory cells containing uterine glands), myometrium (middle, thickest layer containnig bundles of smooth muscle separated by connective tissue containing many blood vessels and 4 layes of smooth muscle), perimetrium (outer connective layer, either adventita or serosa)
What three types of tissue are present in the vagina?
mucosa, muscle, and adventitia
What types of cells line the vagina?
nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium
What types of muscular layers line the vagina?
inner circular and outer longitudinal
