Histology - Blood and Blood vessels Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of blood vessels?
Tunica Intima, tunica media and tunic adventitia.
What makes up the tunica intima?
Squamous endothelial cells.
What makes up the tunica media?
Smooth muscle.
What makes up the tunica adventitia?
Supporting connective tissue
What separates the tunica intima and the tunica media?
Internal elastic membrane
What separates the tunica media and the tunica adventitia?
External elastic membrane
In large arteries, what is different about the tunica media compared to standard blood vessels?
The smooth muscle in the tunica media is replaced with sheets of elastic fibres.
What do capillaries consist of?
Only endothelial cells and a basal lamina.
What are the 3 types of capillaries?
Continuous, discontinuous and fenestrated.
What are fenestrated capillaries like?
Small pores and very common.
What are discontinuous capillaries like?
Large gaps to allow some nutrients to pass through.
What are post capillary venules good for?
Important sites for exchange as the blood slows down so cell trafficking can occur.
How does the fluid move about the lymph system?
By hydrostatic pressure in the tissue and compression of vessels by voluntary muscle.
What are the 3 granulocytes?
Neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils.
What are the 2 agranulocytes?
Lymphocytes and Monocytes.
