Caste System
A hierarchical social structure in traditional Hindu society, dividing people into four main classes: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (laborers). Each group has specific duties (dharma) and responsibilities
Untouchables
People who fall outside of the four classes of the caste system. Traditionally, they were considered impure and were subjected to extreme social discrimination and exclusion from mainstream society
Dalit
“Oppressed” or “Broken,” people who belong in the lowest social class in India, traditionally outside the caste system and formerly known as “Untouchables”
4 Stages of Life (Ashramas)
In Hinduism, they are Brahmacharya (student life), Grihastha (householder life), Vanaprastha (hermit or retired life), and Sannyasa (renounced life). Each stage represents a phase in a person’s spiritual and social development
Gender Influence
In Hinduism, roles are traditionally influenced by religious texts and cultural practices, often assigning distinct roles and duties to men and women within the household and society. Interpretations and practices vary widely across regions and communities
Renouncer (Sannyasin)
A Hindu who has entered the final stage of life, abandoning worldly possessions, family ties, and societal obligations to focus solely on spiritual pursuits and the quest for moksha
Sadhu/Acestic
A holy person in Hinduism who has renounced worldly attachments to pursue a life of meditation, penance, and spiritual discipline. They often live in solitude or as wandering monks, dedicated to achieving spiritual enlightenment
Om (Aum)
A sacred syllable and spiritual symbol in Hinduism, often considered the primordial sound of the universe. It represents the essence of the ultimate reality (Brahman) and is chanted at the beginning and end of prayer, rituals, and meditation
Veneration of Cows
Cows are considered sacred in Hinduism, symbolizing non-violence, fertility, and the nurturing aspect of the divine. The cow is associated with various deities, including Krishna and Lakshmi, and is revered as a source of sustenance and life
