high yield anaerobes Flashcards
1
Q
anaerobes
A
Anaerobes lack catalase and superoxide dismutase making them susceptible to oxygen damage
Foul smelling infections due to SCFA produced during fermentation
Difficult to culture
Three main ones: Clostridium, Bacteriodes, Actinomyces
2
Q
Bacteriodes fragilis
A
Gram - bacilli part of normal colonic flora
Virulence factors: Polysaccharide capsule, aerotolerant (bc they encode catalase and dismutase)
Often found in mixed bacterial intrabdominal infections especially with Peptostreptococcus
Grows on bile-esculin agar (medium that inhibits most aerobes and other anaerobes)
3
