Hiatus hernia Flashcards
two types of haitus hernia?
sliding and rolling
what is the more common type of hernia?
sliding (95%)
Part of stomach at the oesophageal gastric junction is pulled upwards through the diaphragm. This reduces the angle between the oesophagus and the stomach
sliding HH
why would you get GORD with sliding HH?
This reduces the angle between the oesophagus and the stomach, and thus removes one of the natural anatomical barriers to reflux
what happens in a rolling hiatus hernia?
part of the funds of the stomach extends through the diaphragm at a separate site from the oesophagus
do you get symptoms from a rolling HH?
no, very rarely. usually incidental finding
First investigation?
barium swallow
treatment of sliding hernia?
symptomatic (GORD)
rolling or unresponsive
