How did Henry become king?

Aims
establish and secure right to throne (usurper), strengthen royal govt by better control of nobility, ensure a strong financial foundation
What did he do to consolidate his position?
predated reign to 21st, married Elizabeth of York Jan 1486 (crowned queen 1847 after Arthur’s birth), naming child Arthur, had coronation before first parliament

138 passed, 46 reversed
What happened to Richards supporters?
they were seen as traitors due to predating reign, act of attainders passed

Thomas Howard
father died fighting for Richard, imprisoned in tower and passed AoA, resisted escape plot so released and put in charge of maintaining law and order in north. Part of AoA reversed, more land restored after he suppressed Yorkshire rebellion

Lovell and Stafford
April 1486. Claimed sanctuary after BoB, broke sanctuary to rebel when Henry was in York, given choice to stop and seek pardon or fight, die and excommunicated. Lovell fled to Burgandy, Stafford sought sanctuary again but was arrested executed. Thomas Lovell pardoned and remained loyal

1487 Henry sent army to defeat Yorkists, Earl of Lincoln and Lovell killed. Simnel captured and worked in Royal Kitchens , Symonds got life in prison
