Hemostasis Flashcards
1
Q
5 Stages of Hemostasis
A
- Vessel Spasm
- Formation of Platelet Plug
- Blood Coagulation
- Clot Retraction
- Clot Lysis (Dissolution)
2
Q
Vessel Spasm
A
- Injury to vessel
- THA2 (Thromboxane 2) is released from platelets (vasoconstrictor)
- Prostacyclin from endothelium (vasodilator)
3
Q
Formation of Platelet Plug
A
- Von Willebrand factor from endothelium binding platelets to exposed collagen fibers
4
Q
Blood Coagulation
A
- 2 pathways
Intrinsic - Activation of factor XII
Extrinsic - Activation of tissue factor
Both lead to activation of Factor X
5
Q
Blood Coagulation Cont.. (Factor X)
A
Conversion of Prothrombin to Thrombin and Fibrinogen to Fibrin
6
Q
Clot Retraction
A
- Clot is formed
- Fibrin pulls out serum from clot causing it to shrink
7
Q
Clot Lysis (Dissolution)
A
- Plasminogen is still in the clot
- Release of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) (clot buster)
- endothelium converts plasminogen to plasmin to digest fibrin strands which dissolve the clot
