Heme/Onc Flashcards
What lab findings are expected in anemia of chronic disease?
Expected laboratory findings in anemia of chronic disease:
low/normal MCV
low iron
high ferritin
low/normal TIBC
Think anemia of chronic disease with a patient that has cancer, trauma or an inflammatory disease (RA, SLE)
What lab findings are expected in iron deficient anemia?
Iron deficiency anemia is the most common microcytic anemia. Lab findings include
Low MCV
low iron
low ferritin
high TIBC
think that the body has low iron in the cells (low ferritin) and it wants more (high TIBC)
Fatigue, weight losss, low-grade fever, splenomegaly.
Cytogenic analysis will reveal a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22.
patients with CML present with fatigue, weight loss, low-grade fever, and splenomegaly.
In accelerated phases of the disease patients may also present with bleeding, petechiae, ecchymosis, bone pain, and fever.
On the test look for a middle-age individual with anemia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, and basophilia.
What lab values will be elevated in von Willibrand disease?
vWD is a decreased concentration of factor VIII.
As a result, your bleeding time (clot effectiveness) and PTT (intrinsic pathway) will be increased.
vWD is the most common inherited bleeding disorder- AD
vWF helps form the platelet plug and acts as a carrier protein for factor VIII.
Patients will present with easy bruising, excessie bleeding from trauma/dental procedures, and heavy menses.
