Normals for Tympanic Membrane
pearly grey translucent shiny light reflex/cone of light with sharp margins at 5:00 or 7:00 (toward jaw depending on R or L ear) concave mobile landmarks visible: bones if tubes, drainage through tubes is ok
Abnormals for Tympanic Membrane
tubes drainage perforated bulging red diffuse light reflex
Expectations for Tubes
fall out after 6 months
tubes can be in ear canal
Weber Test
not accurate until school-age
smack tuning fork on hand
place on superior middle portion of skull; ask if pt hears equally in both ears
Rinne Test
not accurate until school-age
place tip of tuning fork on mastoid process
ask child to tell you when they no longer hear the tuning fork
place 1-2cm from entrance of auditory canal
ask pt to tell you when they can no longer hear
NORMAL: air conduction = 2x bone conduction
if bone longer than air –> conductive hearing loss
if air:bone < 2:1 –> sensorineural hearing loss?
