Hearing aids Flashcards
What is a hearing aid?
Sound amplifier - passes from the microphone which goes through a processor that amplifies the sound and passes it to a small loudspeaker
how can a hearing aid be fitted?
Behind the ear, in the ear and in the canal
when might hearing aids be the wrong thing to give?
patients with cochlear or retro-cochlear hearing loss - sound becomes very distorted
What common complaint in people that are hard of hearing?
Difficulty with background noise
What is a telecoil?
a loop system - fitted in rooms, lecture halls etc, causes distortions in magnetic fields which re then picked up by the users hearing aid and converted back to sound
The only downside is that the microphone is turned off
What is feedback caused by in a hearing aid?
amplified sound being picked up by microphone causing a feedback loop
- wax in ear canal
ear mould not inserted correctly
What are bone anchored hearing aids?
pure titanium screw is put into the skull - metal abutment screws into this and passes through the skin
What is a vibrant sound bridge?
sound processor that converts sound into electrical signals which are transmitted across skin to the implant via induction
this this converts into mechanical vibrations that are conducted in the inner ear
How do cochlear implants work?
Electrical stimulation of neural structures in the cochlea
- usually indicated in people with sensorineural hearing loss where conventional hearing aids are of little help
