Where does the vascular supply to the nose originate from?
branches of the internal and external carotid - anastomose extensively within the wall of the nose and septum
What branches come off ICA?
Anterior and posterior ethmoidal arteries
ECA?
Sphenopalatine, greater palatine and superior labial artery
What is the most common place for a nose bleed? why?
Little’s area - kisselbach’s plexus on the anterior septum - no of vessels anastomose
What are some local causes of epistaxis?
Idiopathic, trauma, foreign bodies
systemic?
Drugs, clotting abnormalities, liver disease
Treatment of epistaxis?
resus patient - consider amount of blood loss, most important in elderly/ cardiovascular disease
local = external pressure to ear for 10 mins , lean forward so no blood goes down your throat
