What are the common pathogens in otitis externa?
Pseudomonas, proteus sp. and staph aureus
What are the common pathogens in fungus infected otitis externa?
Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans
- these types of infections tend to after a bacterial episode of otitis media
How is eczematous otitis externa treated?
Steroid without an antibiotic
What can be used to dissolve wax that is less likely to cause a skin reaction?
sodium bicarb, olive oil
Why do insects in ear cause great distress?
feel + hear insect moving about in their tympanic membrane - should be drowned with water immediately
Describe how to apply ear drops and why it is important to know the tympanic membrane is intact
Straighten ear canal by pulling pinna upwards and backwards - instil drops and press trigs repeatedly over the introtius of ear canal
some treatment is ototoxic - gentamicin drops
What is a wick ?
Little table that is put in the ear to help the medicine dissolve
What are some side effects of ear drops?
give an explanation for dizziness and ototoxicity
dizziness - if drops not close to body temp - lateral semicircular canal is stimulated by temp difference
local sensitivity and
ototoxicity - risk with aminoglycosides
