What are the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect how we age?
Intrinsic - genetically determined pace, build up of damaging products and increasing biological aging of the cells.
Oestrogen levels influence skin integrity
Extrinsic insults from the environment add to the dermatological signs of aging
How does uneven pigmentation occur in older patients
Where does the fat go when you get older? and what changes?
Melanocytes decrease at a rate of 8% to 20% per decade, resulting in uneven pigmentation in elderly skin
Volume of subcutaneous fat typically diminishes with age
Fat distribution changes as well
Decreases in the face, hands, and feet
Relative increase in the thighs, waist, and abdomen.

Blepharoplasty
what is blepharoplasty used for?
what is the physiology behind ageing eyelids
explain what happens during blepharoplasty
Ageing eyelids
Accumulation of loose skin forms deepening creases in the lower lids.
Slackening of the muscle beneath the skin allowing the fat, which cushions the eyes in their sockets, to protrude forward to give the appearance of bagginess
Blepharoplastyis an operation to reshape the eyelids.
Incision in the creases of the upper lids and just below the lashes in the lower.
Through these incisions, extra fat, excess skin and sagging muscle are removed.
What is the difference between healing by secondary intention and primary closure?
SI = irregular wound, granulation over wound the epithelium covers it
however it can have better cosmetic outcomes doing it this way
FI = the skin just heals over the wound due to it being sewed up
