Need which people feel, need from the perspective of people who have it
Expressed need

Need which they say they have, people can feel need which they do not express and can express needs they do not feel = Demand

Systematic method for reviewing the health issues facing a population > agreed priorities and resource allocation improve and reduce inequalities
Why health needs assessment

- Define your population (geographically, gender, ethnicity)
- Identify your stakeholders (DoH, patient support groups, GPs)

- Epidemiological (expensive, measure health status of population)

- Corporate (ask experts)
Need
Capacity to benefit (genetics and lifestyle)
Demand
Felt need and express it (media and education)
Supply
Whether need is provided for (public and political pressure, historical patterns)
