What are the client’s roles under CDM?
- Appoint the other roles
- Provide the principal designer with information to complete their pre-construction information pack
- Alert the HSE if the project is notifiable
What is CDM 2015?
Construction Design and Management Regulation 2015.
It sets out requirements for managing health and safety on construction projects
When is a project notifiable?
30+ days and 20 people simultaneously on site at any point; or 500+ person days
Where must an F10 be displayed and what must it contain?
This must be clearly displayed on site and show items as required under schedule 1 of CDM 2015
- Name, address, number, and email of the client, PD, and PC
- The Planned start date and duration of works
- The type of works
- The maximum number of people on site
What are the Principal designers roles under CDM 2015?
- Produce pre-construction information
- Identify, eliminate, and control potential risks
- Ensure the client has undertaken their duties such as reporting if a project is notifiable
What are the Principal contractors roles under CDM 2015?
- Produce the construction information
- Identify, eliminate, and control potential risks
- Provide suitable site inductions
- Provide adequate welfare
Prevent unauthorised access
What must be provided under schedule 2 of CDM 2015?
- Sanitary and wash facilities
- Drinking water
- Resting places
§ Including an area to boil water
§ Space to prepare and eat food
§ Must be maintained at an appropriate temperature
What is COSHH?
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
What must the employer do under COSHH?
- Assess the risk of using substances hazardous to health
§ This includes what to do if an event such as a spillage occurs
§ The risk assessment must also include for the storage, transport, disposal and handling of the substances - Prevent the risk from occurring
§ Or control exposure to said substances - Provide staff with information, instructions, and training

- Gases
- Chemicals
- Germs

- Dust
What substances are not covered under COSHH?
- Asbestos
- Lead
- Radioactive substances
What disease are you at risk of catching when there is stagnant water on site?
legionella; legionnaires’ disease
What is the asbestos regulation?
The control of asbestos regulation 2012
What are the 3 main types of asbestos?
- Chrysotile (White)
- Amosite (Brown)
- Crocidolite (Blue)
Where are you likely to find asbestos in a building?
- Floor/Ceiling tiles
- Fire-Proofing
- Lagging to pipes and boilers
- Cement panels
What is non-licensed asbestos work?
Where there is a reduced risk of harm, and trained but non-licensed individuals can undertake the work
What are some examples of non-licensed asbestos work?
- Removal of asbestos cement products (provided it is not falling apart)
- Removal and refixing (screwing) of asbestos insulating board to gain access
What are some examples of licensed asbestos work?
- Removal of spray coating
- Removal of pipe lagging
- Working on loose fill insulation
What’s included in a pre-construction information pack?
information regarding:
- Planning and management of the project
- Health and Safety Hazards (related to design e.g. surveys; and to construction)
- previous H&S files
- Client considerations (have they undertaken their duties?)
- Any systems in place e.g. permit-to-work, hot works…
What should occur at a site induction?
- Outline of the project
- Outline of activities currently on site
- How the project is being managed
- H&S procedures
When should a site induction occur?
- On the first day on site
- For non-workers who visit site (architects, students etc.)
Site inductions should be proportional to the nature of the visit.
What does RIDDOR stand for?
Reporting of Incidents, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulation 2013
What does RIDDOR require?
It requires the ‘responsible person’ to notify any death, reportable injury, disease or dangerous occurrence to the HSE
