SNOOP mnemonic for headache red flags
- Systemic symptoms (fever, unintended weightloss)
- Neurological signs (confusion, nuchal rigidity, papilledema, cranial nerve dysfunction)
- Onset sudden onset, or onset with exertional activity
- Onset age > 50 or younger than 5
- Prior headache hx, Positional, Papilledema
What are you thinking if a patient presents with a sudden onset, thunderclap headache?
Sub-arachnoid hemorrhage
What are you thinking if a patient presents with an onset of headaches after age 50?
Giant cell arteritis
What are you thinking if a patient presents with a headache during positional changes?
Intracranial hypotension, posterior fossa pathology, cervicogenic headache
What are you thinking if a patient presents with a headache and systemic symptoms including fever, unintended weight loss?
An infection like meningitis, encephalitis, metastatic disease
Define viremic headache?
Headache present during viral infection ie: flu.
