Mechanical Restraint
Use of equipment such as leashes, collars, restraint bags, and poles
Manual Restraint
Using your hands to hold an animal in a desired position
Chemical Restraint
Use of sedatives, tranquilizers, and anaesthetics
Training Collar
Stainless - steel links with a rung at each end, forming a dog collar designed to tighten momentarily with a short firm tug
Cephalic Vein
Venipuncture site along the front of the fore leg
Head Snare
A long metal or heavy - duty plastic tubular handle with a thick retractable wire inside it, forming a large loop designed to be puled out, slipped over and animals head and quickly tightened
Jugular Vein
Venipuncture site on the front of the neck
Lateral Recumbency
Animal laying on its side
Occlude
To block or hold off a vein by pressing on it with your finger allowed blood to pool in the vein
Venipuncture
Puncturing a vein to collect blood, administer medication, or pass a catheter
Saphenous Vein
Venipuncture site on the outer surface if hind leg
Slip leash
A leash or flat braided nylon with a ring at one end, designed to tighten momentarily the way a training collar does

Muzzle
Any device applied around an animals nose and mouth to prevent the animal from biting
Cat Bag
A restraint device designed to enclose a cats body while providing access to treatment sire

Technique of grasping a cat by scruff of neck

Used for rat and mouse venipuncture; a clear plastic tube with holes drilled into ti
Forceps
Instrument that grasps small rodents and allows for their transport from on cage to another
Bull Staff
Restraint equipment for cattle consitsting of a long handled metal rod with a large hook at one end that clips to a nose ring (Head restraint)
Cattle Chute
A cattle examination area large enough to hold one animal, often with poles for cross tying and an opening to hold it’s head in place
Chain Shank
A long letter lead rope with a two ft length or chain a snap hook at one end, used to distract a horse
Chain Twitch
Horse restraint composed of a long wooden handle with a loop of stainless steel chain at one end, designed to stimulate the nerves distracting it
Cross - Tie
Restraint method restricting an animals side to side head movements by tying two ropes to halter and cross tie rings in a barn or trailer
Halter
Gear composed of a nose band and throat latch that encircles the head; allows a lead to be attached
Milking Hobbles
Two metal bands, connected by a length of chain used to prevent a cow from kicking
Stanchion
An opening at the front of a cattle chute that holds the head in place
Stocks
Narrow enclosures that partially immobilize a horse for treatment
Casting Rope
Rope used to place an enclosed animal on its side
Hobble
A leather strap fastened around an animals legs to restrict movement
Lead
A guide leash, often made of leather or rope that is attached to a halter and allows you to hold an animal in place or guide its directions
Nasal Septum
Tissue between he nostriles
Nose Lead
Large metal tongs with large ball shaped end, designed to hold the head of a cattle in place
Tail Jacking
Used to prevent kicking; Involves lifting tail in line with the spine to avoid fracturing the vertebrae
Tail Tying
Involved tying an animals tail out of the way
Catching Hook
A hook usually about 5 inches long attached to a king handled pole for the purpose of catching chickens and turkeys
Catching Net
A net usually attached to the end of a long handled wooden pole
Hurdle
Flat shield like pieces of plastic or plywood used to direct a group of pigs
V-trough
V-shaped trough made of plywood to restrain pigs on their back
Pig Catcher
Long handled, large clamp with rope that holds ends of clamps shut
Snubbing Rope
Rope with a loop with one end, tied with slip knot so loop can be tighten to restrain a pigs head
