Haemostasis Flashcards
What does prostacyclin do?
Inhibits platelet activation and is also an effective vasodilator
How are clots refined to site of injury?
Natural anticoagulants stop spread of clot
How are resting platelets and coagulation factors activated?
Abnormal surface uncovers collagen which the platelets recognise and adhere to
Tissue factor released from site and triggers coagulation cascade
What are some signallers which platelets have surface receptors for in order to prep them for function?
ADP
Epinephrine
Thrombin
What do platelets do in haemostasis?
Adhere to injury sites
Activate
Aggregate
Provide phospholipid surface for coagulation
How does aspirin work?
Inhibits cyclooxygenase pathway which interrupts platelet aggregation
What is Von Willebrand factor?
Adhesive and multimeric glycoprotein
Binds to collagen surfaces, factor 8
What is Von Willebrand disease?
Blood disorder in which the blood can’t clot
