Sattva
The power of harmony, balance, intelligence, and light.
The purest diet: cereals, wholemeal bread, fresh fruit & vegetables, pure fruit juices, legumes, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds, honey, herb teas.
Rajas
The power of action, change, energy, movement.
Destroys the mind-body equilibrium, feeding body at expense of the mind: foods that are very hot, bitter, sour, dry, or salty.
Tamas
The power of darkness, inertia, materiality.
Benefits neither mind nor body. Body’s resistance to disease is destroyed, mind filled with darker emotions.
Meat, alcohol, tobacco, onions, garlic, fermented foods (e.g. vinegar), stale or overripe substances, or those chemically treated, processed or refined. Overeating is also tamasic.
