GU Diagnostic Procedures Flashcards
KUB (Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder) purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
An X-ray of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder that visualizes stones, strictures, calcifications, or obstructions.
No prep
pt must lie still and flat
no post care
IVP (Intravenous urography) purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Visualize kidneys, renal pelvis, ureters, & bladder
Informed consent, laxative/bowel prep, NPO after midnight, no benadryl or glucophage, assess allergic to iodine and shellfish.
pt must Lie flat and still, injection of IV dye and x-rays taken after injection.
Encourage fluid intake to excrete dye, monitor BUN and creatinine
CT purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Provides 3d info about kidneys, ureters, bladder, & tissue. Also provides info about tumors, cysts, abscesses, masses, obstructions, and renal blood vessels.
No consent unless using contrast. if using check allergies. also check creatinine levels, dye can cause renal failure.
Lie flat and still. Inject IV dye and x-rays taken.
Encourage fluid intake to excrete dye, monitor BUN and creatinine
Cystography purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Used to outline the bladder’s shape and to detect reflux.
No prep
Instillation of dye not bladder via catheter. X-ray taken from different locations.
Monitor for infection. Encourage fluids to dilute urine. Monitor for changes in UOP.
Renography purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Informs about renal blood flow
no prep
Injection of dye and pics of the radioactive emissions are recorded
Encourage voiding. Assess b/p frequently if captopril was used
Ultrasonography purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Visualize kidneys, ureters, blader, and tissues. Id obstructions, tumors, cysts, and masses.
Requires a full bladder
Prone position. Application of US gel to enhance sound-wave conduction.
Skin care to remove US gel
Bladder Scanner purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Determines retained urine volume. Completed at beside by approved clinical staff.
No prep
Prone position. Application of US gel to enhance sound-wave conduction.
Skin care to remove US gel
Cystoscopy purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Dx or treat. Used to discover abnormalities of bladder wall/occlusions of ureter or urethra.
Informed consent, pre op checklist, npo after midnight.
Introduction of cytoscope/urethroscope after sedation.
Watch for bleeding/infection. Monitor UOP, pink tinged is normal, encourage po intake to decrease burning urination.
Urodynamic Studies purpose: Prep: Procedure: Post-Care:
Examination of voiding process.
Perform cath.
Dependent on exam.
monitor for infection and UOP.
