Q

Rationale for probing

A

Should be used to answer…

  • Does the skill currently exist already?
  • Least amount of prompting required for the response to occur?
  • What effect does a particular intervention have on a behavior?

Q

Best Practices

A
  1. closest naturalistic as possible
  2. probes should not be close together
  3. any reinforcement or ec should be natural and not contrived

Q

Probing Under Extinction

AKA “Cold probe”

A
  1. Specifically do not provide reinforcement or ec
  2. Most common probing for assessment
  3. Reinforcement can be provided on a VI or FI schedule for general participation

Q

Probing Outside of Assessment

A

Prior to introduction of instruction

  • Test for concept formation/generativity (ability to generalize across response class)
  • Determine current performance to select prompts
  • For maintenance

Q

Probes Prior to Instruction

A
  • Identify where current skill set is
  • Least to most prompting
  • Look for concept formation/generativity
  • Generalize across response class

Q

Probing Throughout Instruction

A
  • Kid makes progress on errorless targets that prompt steps may be skipped
  • Information may be gleaned from probing
  • Makes instruction more effective by only teaching at levels required

Q

First Trial Probes

A
  • During acquisition programs
  • RBTs only collect data on the first trial run
  • Reinforcement and ec are provided according to the prescribed program

A

First Trial Probes

17
Q

Pros of First Trial Probes

A
  • Lower response effort for RBTs
  • Faster mastery
  • Gives info on skill retention between days
18
Q

Cons of First Trial Probes

A
  • Less precise measurement
  • First instance could get it, rest of them miss, so really they don’t have it mastered, but the data says 100%
  • Lower maintenance
  • Obscures other important trends
19
Q

Maintenance Probes

A
  • Skills that do not get reinforcement regularly are at risk for being extinguished
  • Lower-level skills that are required for a higher-level skills are less likely to be extinguished
  • Ensuring that skills are maintained is integral to ensuring that ABA is valid and useful for patient and their family

Q

Assessment Probes

A

Multiple probe design

  • Variation of multiple baseline design
  • Measuring intermittent data during baseline
  • Saves time and effort to record
  • Data should be collected at the right times to establish trends and patterns in the data
