Groups and team dynamics Flashcards
What is a group?
A collection of people who share similar goals and interact with one another
What are the 4 stages of group formation?
Forming
Storming
Norming
Performing
What is the norming stage of group formation?
The familiarisation stage where group members get to know each other and their strengths and weaknesses.
What is the storming stage of group formation?
Members question the group structure and compete for status
What is the norming stage of group formation?
A need for a common goal is recognised and members begin to work together
What is the performing stage of group formation?
Each member is aware of their role within the team and feels that they can contribute to the success of the team
What is Steiner’s model of group effectiveness?
Actual group productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faulty group processes
What is potential productivity?
The perfect performance a team could achieve based on the ability of the individuals on the team
What 2 factors causes losses due to faulty processes?
Motivation faults (occurs when some of the team do not give 100%)
Coordination faults (occurs when players interact poorly or ineffective strategies are used)
What is the Ringelmann effect?
Occurs when individual performance decreased as group size increased
What is social loafing?
When some individuals in a group lose motivation. It is caused by the individual losing identity when placed in a group.
Individual efforts may not be recognised by those who are spectating/taking part.
