What is anxiety?
The negative aspect of experiencing stress and can be caused by worry, apprehension or fear of failure
What is trait anxiety?
A trait that is enduring for an individual.
A performer with high trait anxiety has the predisposition or the potential to react to situations with apprehension
What is competitive trait anxiety?
A tendency to perceive competitive situations as threatening and respond to these situations with feelings of apprehension or tension
What is state anxiety?
The athletes emotional state at any given time. Variable from situation to situation
What is cognitive anxiety?
Anxiety experienced by the mind
E.g. indecision, confusion, negative thoughts, poor concentration
What is somatic anxiety?
Anxiety experienced physiologically
E.g. increased BP, sweating, adrenaline boost, muscle tension, nausea
What is the zone of optimal functioning?
It is an emotional response that facilitates top performance and is often referred to as the peak flow experience.
It will be different for every individual
