What can goal setting develop?
Positive self esteem and reduce the anxiety that may arise prior to and during a performance. It can help to improve confidence and motivation levels
How can goal setting influence performance?
It directs the attention of the performance onto the required task
Increases the effort applied by the performer
Improves persistence when a task becomes difficult or when failure is experienced
Increases motivation to learn and apply different approaches to learning in order to complete a task successfully
Helps to raise confidence and self-efficacy
Helps break performance down into manageable tasks, helping to control arousal and anxiety
Explain SMART targets
Specific = goals must be clear and specific
Measurable = goals must be assessed and therefore need to be measurable
Achievable = goals that are shaped by performers and coaches are more likely to be achievable as all interested parties have a common purpose and the goals set are realistic
Recorded = goals should be recorded so that progress can be monitored
Time-phased = goals should be split into short term goals leading to long term goals
What is a performance goal?
A goal concerned with judging your performance against other performances
What is an outcome goal?
A goal related to the outcome of a performance
What is a process orientated goal?
A goal that focuses on technique and tactics
