Groups And Rates Of Reaction (paper2) Flashcards
Name some properties of alkali metals
Conducts electricity, malleable, low melting points, soft and easy to cut
Are alkali metals reactive?
Yes, very
How does the reactivity increase in alkali metals
Down the group
What is added to the alkali metals down each element
An electron shell
Do alkali metals lose or gain an electron
Lose
How come alkali metals are so reactive
The more energy levels, the weaker the attraction of the nucleus. This means the easier it is to lose the electron
What are the group 7 elements called
Halogens
How many outer electrons do halogens have
7
What type of molecules are halogens
Diatomic
What is the relationship between concentration and rate of reaction
It increases the rate of reaction as collisions occur more often because there are more particles
What is the relationship between pressure and rate of reaction
It increases the rate of reaction, as particles are closer together so more effective collisions happen.
What is the relationship between temperature and rate of reaction
It increases the rate of reaction, as the particles have more energy and therefore speed up. They collide more often and have enough energy to react when that happens.
What is the relationship between surface area and rate of reaction
The larger the total surface area and by increasing the surface area to volume ratio, increases the rate of reaction. As there is more surface area and therefore more readily available particles to collide.
What is the minimum amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur
Activation energy
What is the ionic equation for every BAWS reaction
OH- + H+ -> H2O
