Group Success Flashcards
What are the 4 key stages of group success?
Forming, storming, norming and performing
Explain forming…
- developing relationships
- working out if they belong in the group
- working out the goal
eg share the same passion
Explain storming…
- Infighting and conflict
- Confrontation with the leaders
- members actively challenge for their role in the team
eg both fighting for striker in the team
Explain norming…
- Conflicts resolved
- group cohesion develops as members become unified
- motivation and success levels rise
Explain performing…
- group stabilised
- fully focused on achieving group success
- respect for other members and leaders is high
eg players play regularly and members praise each other for team success
What is the difference between actual productivity and potential productivity?
Actual = team's level of achievement eg getting to the final Potential = best possible level when the team is cohesive
What is the equation of group success?
actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faulty processes
What are losses due to faulty thought processes?
- the coordination and motivation problems that a team faces which reduces the level of cohesion and therefore lowers the level of achievement and motivation
What are some examples of problems faced affecting productivity of a team?
- Coordination problems (fail to communicate properly with each other)
- Lack of understanding of the member’s role
- lack of understanding of tactics set by coach
- the Ringelmann effect
- social loafing
What is the ringelmann effect?
- as the number of people in the team increases, the level of performance of the individuals decrease
eg rugby 7’s compared to 15 a side rugby - this is because of lower motivation
What is social loafing?
when performers lower their contribution to the team and believe their not valued as as members of the group and so they strop trying
What factors contribute to social loafing?
- coach not giving praise
- no clear role within the group
- teammates aren’t trying so they do the same
- poor leadership (captain doesn’t encourage performers)
- high levels of trait or state anxiety
- social inhibition
What is group cohesion?
and what are the two types of cohesion?
unity of a team to reach their aim. The more cohesive, the more successful the team is
There is task cohesion and social cohesion
What is the difference between task and social cohesion
Task - team unity where the share a common aim and come together to reach that goal. They may not sociable together away from the team but they have good communication and understanding
eg football, hockey etc
Social - Feel attached to each other, communicate and support within and outside the team
eg co-active sports such as davis cup in tennis where the efforts are individual but contribute to the team
What are the 4 factors that Carron suggest contribute to a successful team?
- Personal = how satisfied feel in the group (motivation)
- Environment = location, whether player has contract or scholarship
- Leadership = good leadership and relationship with group members
- Team = stability of the group, common experiences in victory and defeat
