A
  • the coordination and motivation problems that a team faces which reduces the level of cohesion and therefore lowers the level of achievement and motivation

A
  • as the number of people in the team increases, the level of performance of the individuals decrease
    eg rugby 7’s compared to 15 a side rugby
  • this is because of lower motivation

A

when performers lower their contribution to the team and believe their not valued as as members of the group and so they strop trying

What factors contribute to social loafing?

A
  • coach not giving praise
  • no clear role within the group
  • teammates aren’t trying so they do the same
  • poor leadership (captain doesn’t encourage performers)
  • high levels of trait or state anxiety
  • social inhibition

What is group cohesion?

and what are the two types of cohesion?

A

unity of a team to reach their aim. The more cohesive, the more successful the team is

There is task cohesion and social cohesion

What is the difference between task and social cohesion

A

Task - team unity where the share a common aim and come together to reach that goal. They may not sociable together away from the team but they have good communication and understanding
eg football, hockey etc
Social - Feel attached to each other, communicate and support within and outside the team
eg co-active sports such as davis cup in tennis where the efforts are individual but contribute to the team

What are the 4 factors that Carron suggest contribute to a successful team?

  • Personal = how satisfied feel in the group (motivation)
  • Environment = location, whether player has contract or scholarship
  • Leadership = good leadership and relationship with group members
  • Team = stability of the group, common experiences in victory and defeat

  • Highlight individual performances eg stats on shots
  • Give specific roles eg stick on this man
  • Develop social cohesion eg team building exercises

  • select players who work well together rather than individual ‘stars’
