Goal Setting Flashcards
What are some benefits of goal setting?
1) Gives a focus (aim)
2) Feel motivated when their goal is complete
3) Maintain high levels of effort in training to achieve the goal
4) Increase confidence
5) Control arousal levels
What are the 3 types of goals?
1) Process = short term goal to improve a specific technique eg free kicks
2) Performance = intermediate goals set out for yourself. To beat your last performance eg do more successful passes
3) Product = long term goals after extensive work eg win the championships
Why are shorter goals better than long term goals?
- short term allow lots of feedback as they are achieved quickly, build confidence and continues to strive towards their goal
- just long term goals increase anxiety levels and increases the likelihood of failure and so will reduce motivation
What is the SMARTER principle?
1) Specific = must be targetted to suit the weakness of the performer eg reach 10 on beep test
2) Measurable = quantifiable to record eg amount of tackles
3) Agreed = performer and coach share responsibility
4) Realistic = Needs to be within reach to increase confidence (not too hard)
5) Time phased = Set period needs to be set so progression can be monitored eg PB in 100m by end of next month
6) Exciting = Motivational and interesting
7) Recorded = Needs to be written down to track progress
