is strep agalactiae resistant or sensitive to catalase?
it is sensitive (negative) to catalase
what type of hemolysis is seen when cultivating strep agalactiae on blood agar?
ß-hemolysis
what will result when using the CAMP test on strep agalactiae?
it will be positive
what does strep agalactiae hydrolyze?

where can strep agalactiae be found normally in the human body?
the vagina
how can strep agalactiae be transmitted to neonates?
what can it lead to if contracted?
through prolonged birth after premature rupture of the membranes with highly colonized mother
may cause neonate to develop meningitis
when is ealy onset meningitis seen?
during 1st week of life
when is late onset meningitis seen?
Exogenous - acquired from mother or another colonized baby during the 2-4 weeks
what are the meningitis symptoms seen in neonates with strep agalactiae infection?

2) bulging fontanelle
3) irritability, poor feeding
what are the consequences of late treatment of neonatal meningitis due to infection with strep agalactiae?
neurologic sequelae (blindness, deafness, retardation)
what treatment can be used for neonatal meningitis?
penicillin/ampicillin plus aminoglycoside, or cephalosporin (cefotaxime)
what prevention can be used to reduce susceptibility to neonatal meningitis?
screening mother for heavy colonization and giving antibiotic to mothers at labor
what are the most common causes of meningitis in neonates (birth to 1 month)?
- Streptococcus agalactiae
