What is the climate in Asturias?
Maritime
- winters are normally mild & rainy
- summers are generally cool with some sun
- 40in/1000mm annual rainfall
- snow near the coast is rare, but frequent more inland, especially in the Cordillera Cantabrica
- vineyards located near the mountains are subject to the foehn effect
What is the climate in Cantabria?
Maritime
* One of the cloudiest parts of Spain
* Coastal areas may experience more sun then the rest of the region
* 47in/1200mm annual rainfall
* snow near the coast is rare, but frequent more inland, especially in the Cordillera Cantabrica
* vineyards located near the mountains are subject to the foehn effect
What is the Foehn Effect?
When air is forced upwards in mountainous terrain, it expands and cools as a result of decreased pressure. Clouds are formed dued to condensation and this results in rain and/or snow in the mountain’s upwind area. The change from vapor to liquid results in heating and leads to warming and drying conditions on the downwind (lee) side of the mountain.
Vineyards in Green Spain located on the downwind side are affected by these foehn winds. The foehn effect causes the growing season to be extended. These winds are also common in other mountainous regions of Spain.
Describe the topography of the Cantabrian Range.
These 2 autonomous regions boast spectacular inland mountain ranges and coastal cliffs.
Which mountain range borders to the south of the Cantabrian Range?
Cordillera Cantabrica
Name the highest peak in the Cordillera Cantabrica mountain chain.
Torrecerredo (8,688ft/2,648m)
Where in Asturias are vineyards planted?
The mountainous areas in the southwest.
Where in Cantabria are vineyards planted?
- along the coast
- in the foothills of the Cordillera Cantabrica
What soil types are found in Asturias?
The limestone mountain ranges give way to slate soils.
The slate soils offer excellent drainage for the high amount of rainfall in the area.
