Grand tour of the alimentary canal Flashcards
What is the digestive system made of
GI tract salivary gland, liver, pancreas and gallbladder
What does the GI tract consist of
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus
Where does most of the absorption occur in the gI tract
Small intestine
Where is water most readily absorbed in the GI tract
Large intestine to solidify the stool and retain water in the body
What is digestion
Break down of foods into simple substances the body can absorb
What is the function of bile acids
Acts as an emulsifier and degrades the fats into smaller forms which can be absorbed easier
What is the difference between serosa and adventitia
Both connective tissue sheets but serosa if in the peritoneal cavity and adventitia if outside the peritoneal cavity
What kind of epithelium lines the mouth, oesophagus and anal canal
Stratified squamos
What kind of epithelium lines the stomach, small and large intestine
Simple columnar
What is the function of adventitia
Attaches oesophagus and rectum to surrounding structures
What is the function of serosa
Surrounds stomach, small intestine and large intestine within the peritoneal cavity
What is the enteric nerous system and function
Submucosal and myenteric plexus working together to have independant control of gut function
What is the autonomic control of the alimentary system
Long parasympathetic coming from spinal chord
Short ENS reflexes - enteric nervous system
What innervates the sublingual and submandibular gland
Facial nerve
What innervates the parotid gland
Glossopharyngeal nerve
