Familial risk - HNPCC, FAP
Inflammatory bowel disease
Age
Male
Diet low in fibre
Alcohol
Smoking
Diabetes
What are colorectal polyps
Adenomas which if left untreated can become cancerous
How does colorectal cancer present
- Rectal bleeding
- Altered bowel habit for 4 weeks
- Iron defficiency anaemia
- Palpable mass
- Systemic symptoms - weight loss and anorexia..
What investigations are done for colorectal cancer
Colonoscopy - can be therapeutic as well
CT colonography is preferred imaging used
What is the treatment for colorectal cancer
Surgery - stoma formation common - colostomy
Chemotherapy
Radiotherapy - rectal cancer only
What is FIT testing
Test for human haemoglobin in stool
What is FAP
Familial adenamatous polyposis - autosomal dominant condition where there are multiple adenomas throughout the colon
