what is the green paper (1)
a consultative document where people are invited to give their views
what is the white paper (2)
a firm set of proposals for people to view before it becomes a draft bill
what’s the first reading (3)
a formal procedure where the name and main aims of the bill are read out and a formal vote is taken
what’s the second reading (4)
considered the most important as a successful vote here means its likely to pass through house
what’s the committee stage (5)
a chosen group of representatives who look closely at the bill to address any issues and suggest appropriate amendments based on the debate from the second reading
whats the report stage (6)
where the committee reports back to the full house who then vote on the proposed amendments
whats the pingpong stage
this is in the legislative process when all the above stages are repeated in another house (usually house of lords) - lords have limited power and can only send the bill back for amendments which is continued until both houses have approved the bill
whats the royal assent (7)
this is the final stage where the monarch gives approval of the bill becoming an act of parliament - monarch has not refused this act since 1700s
