aims of sentencing - rehabilitation Flashcards
what is the aim
hope that offenders behaviour will be altered meaning they won’t reoffend in the future
why is there controversy about rehabilitation
the sentences are expensive and require investment of resources
its also debatable as to wether its right for the state to change the way people think rather than punishing them for their actions
what community sentencing is it seen in
unpaid work, completion of education or training course such as speed awareness
what punishment has been introduced to help rehabilitate drug offenders
drug testing and treatment orders
how does it link to right realism
reformation is a very important element which presumes that criminal behaviour is a result of free will and rational choice so this behaviour can be rehabilitated
example: anger management courses focus on extinguishing bad behaviours and promoting moral ones
