The Bill of Rights
The first ten amendments of the Constitution that lay out the most important rights that our government cannot violate.
-Limit the power of the government
First Amendment
Protects our freedom of speech, religion, press, petition, peaceful assembly
Second Amendment
Protects our right to bear arms (own a gun)
Fourth Amendment
Protects us from unreasonable or unwarranted searches by the government.
Fifth Amendment
- Protects you from being forced to be a witness against yourself
- From being tried more than once for the same crime if you are found not guilty at trial
- From being deprived of life, liberty or property without due process
- From self-incrimination
- “Right to remain silent”
Sixth Amendment
- Protects your right to be tried by a jury of your peers
- Have a lawyer act in your defense
Eighth Amendment
Protects us from cruel and unusual punishment
Tenth Amendment
Any powers not given to the federal government, or expressly denied to the states, will be reserved to the states. “States’ Rights”
Branches of government
- Legislative (Congress)
- Judicial (Supreme Court)
- Executive (President)
“Limited government”
The government is not all powerful
