What are the Xray characteristics of gout ?
Soft tissue - Swelling/ effusion/ Gas and tophi in the soft tissue
Bone - Regional Osteopenia, Rat- Bite erosions.
What do the bony erosions look like in gout ?
RAT BITE EROSIONS - They tend to occur away from the joint margins. Spherical with a deep punched out appearance. They have sclerotic borders.
what blood marker is used to asses for gout ?
Uric acid. This causes uric acid crystals around the joint.
What is Gout ?
It is a form of a crystal arthropathy. This occurs when crystal of uric acid accumulate on the articular cartilage with provokes an inflammatory response.
When is gout usually seen ?
Patients who under excrete urate due to kidney impairment .
What can secondary signs of gout include ?
Extensive bony destruction, joint space narrowing and deformity.
How long does it take for gout to be seen on Xray ?
4-6 years of living with gout.
What is the distribution of gout?
Any joint.
Most commonly MTPJ, mid foot region.
