They didnt have as strong of a military… what was strong?

Increased the population.
Who was at the top of the social order?
Gentry- Landowners, wealthy. To exceed wealth, their sons had to do good on the civil service exam
Who were middle class?
Peasants. - worked the lands and if they wanted to be rich their son had to do well on the civil service exam.
Who were the lowest class and why?
Merchants because confucious said merchants should be low ranked because their profit comes from other peoples work. They or their sons had to do well on the exam to move up.
What was the status for women?
They often took care of finances.
What tradition did a certain emporer find attractive in women?
Foot binding (small feet)
What is foot binding?
You had to crush your feet to make them smaller to fit “lotus shoes”.
