Goal Setting And SMART Targets Flashcards
What are the five main values of goal setting?
Increases motivation/feel good factor
Increases attention and focus
Increase task persistence
Monitors progress
Decreases stress
Increasing motivation
By increasing a performers motivation you will find they will work more effectively towards their goal
Increase attention
Allows u to specifically focus on the task at hand. Example would be if ur running a marathon you would focus training on running
Increase task persistence
By increasing thus, they will continue to work towards their goal regardless of how difficult it is
Monitoring progress
Allows u to assess progress over time. When assessing progress you can measure how much the performer has improved
Decrease stress
This is done by making the goal setting for the performer achievable. If it isn’t the performer will have increased stress levels
What does SMART stand for?
S - specific
M - measurable
A - achievable
R - realistic
T - time - bound
Specific
Gives a clear focused goal. Being specific within a goal allows an individual or a team to increase their focus on what needs to be improved.
Could be specific to an individual
Measurable
Provides a way of checking if u have improved
When measuring ur targets it can improve motivation. This is due to athlete seeing improve,et over time. Targets must have links to unit of measurement
Achievable
A task u know u can complete because u have the ability to do so. Too hard can be demotivating
Realistic
A task u can complete because u have the resources to do so. These goals can affect task persistence
Time bound
A deadline to complete the task by. Providing time can increase motivation and task persistence. Can be given on a time scale either short medium or long.
