What is practice
Practice is needed to get better at a specific skill
It also needs to be structured so that it’s effective for different types of kills, sports and the individual ability
What are the types of practice
Distributed
Massed
Fixed
Variable
What is massed practice and who is it used by
When there is little to no rest in a session. The skill is repeated over and over.
Used by - highly motivated who can cope with boring and repetitive
Very fit - fatigue won’t impact quality of performance
Skill already learned - improves muscle memory
Advantages and disadvantages of massed practice
Advantage - correct movement patters establishes
Disadvantage - can be boring and tiring and lead to errors
When is massed practice used
Simple, closed, low organization skills
What is distribute practice and when is it used
When there are breaks in the session providing rest periods, to change an activity or for feedback. Fewer repetitions and more then 1 skill practiced.
Used when - complex, open, high organization
Advantages and disadvantages of distributed practice and who it’s used by
Advantage - prevents boredom. Allow time for recovery and feedback
Disadvantage- takes longer to learn a skill. Could lose concentration
Used by - beginners, young performers and not very fit
What is fixed practice and who is it used by?
Repeatedly practicing a whole movement within a training session. Fixed is best for developing closed skills as the player can perfect the skill.
When is fixed practice used
The sport is made up of complex skills and the practice sessions take place in a similar situation to the performance situation would be
What happens during fixed practice
The situation doesn’t change, routines a repeated and grooved until it becomes automatic, the equipment stays the same.
Eg - floor routine in gymnastics, triple jump
What is variable practice
When same skill performed in different situations. It is best for developing open skills as performer or team can practice skill under pressure whilst in different situations. Makes it easy to implement in the real game.
When is variable practice used?
The sport made up of open skills because situation is often changing
Level of difficulty amongst skills can increase so a performer is able to complete the same skill in more challenging situations
