What are factors that affect participation rates in sport?
Gender, age, socio economic group, ethnicity and disability
How can gender affect the reason for playing a sport and what reasons included in not participating?
Nature of activity - society see sport as more associated with either men or women.
Lack of participation due to barriers preventing them.
Reasons -
image - some men don’t wanna dance or play netball and women don’t wanna play rugby considered male activities. Either gender worry about what people will think
Cost - women generally earn less
Time - women is restricted as look after hom/children as well as work.
How does age affect participation rates and what are the reasons they don’t participate?
Access - perhaps have a weekend par time Job oas some places only allow access for kids on weekends
Cost - money needed to pay bills
Time - less time due to work
Nature of activity - some more difficult to play in as person get older.
Reasons ethnicity of a person may stop them from participating in a sport?
Cultural influences - family or peers influencing whether someone does or doesn’t do an activity
Stereotyping - people from particular backgrounds are steered towards or way from certain activities.
African - long distance rather then swimming
Cost- due to socio economic grouping people from different ethnic minority groups may have less money to spend on sport.
Reasons for disability in participation?
Availability- Lack of facilities or clubs in the area
Cost - specialists equipment may be expensive
Access - physical barriers lack of ramps
Stereotypes- whether by person with disabilities or others assuming those w disability are unable to participate
