What is the definition of a goal?
What an individual is trying to achieve
It is the object or aim of an action
What are the 5 ways in which goals can affect performance?
Directs attention to task
Increases effort applied
Improves persistence when task is difficult
Increases motivation to use different approaches to learn
Monitors performance
How does goal setting influence participation?
Increasing confidence
Improving technique
Controlling anxiety
What are the 5 parts of SMART goals?
Specific Measurable Achievable Recorded Time bound
How can goals be specific?
Must be relevant for a particular person/sport
Eg Full-back maintain 80% catch rate
How can goals be measurable?
Comparable data from a set standard
Eg 100m sprinter reducing time from 12.5-12.2 seconds in 6 months
How can goals be achievable?
Must be realistic but challenging as too hard or too easy causes loss in motivation
How can goals be recorded?
Progress is tracked in a log
Eg recorded times in log for a 100m sprinter so can see improvement
How can goals be time bound?
Must have a deadline to which the goal should be achieved
short/medium/long term
What 2 groups can goals be divided into?
Time-based goals
Activity-based goals
What are time based goals?
Goals that are based on time, can be either short, medium or long term.
What are long term goals?
An ultimate aim which may take an extended period of time to achieve.
Eg A striker in football aiming to score 20 goals in a season
What is the problem with long term goals?
On their own they can be daunting, resulting in demotivation
What are short term goals?
Give immediate success at the level of the performers existing capability. Become progressively more difficult. Most effective goals to help achieve long term goal.
Eg get into the starting team
What are medium term goals?
Assists in the achievement of long term goals and reinforces the success of short term goals.
Eg Aiming to be 10th in the league half way through the season
