Gluteal Muscles Flashcards
What is the MA of the Gluteus Maximus?
Hip extension (especially from a flexed position)
Assists in lateral rotation of the hip
Fixes hip joint and assists in rising from sitting position
What is the PA of the Gluteus Maximus?
Posterior gluteal line of ilium, dorsal sacrum and coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament
What is the DA of the Gluteus Maximus?
Most fibers end in iliotibial tract (IT Band), which attaches to Gerdy’s tubercle & some fibers insert on gluteal tuberosity
What is the N for the Gluteus Maximus?
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, & S2)
What is the MA of the Gluteus Medius?
Abduction of the hip
Anterior fibers medially rotate the hip
Posterior fibers laterally rotate the hip joint
Keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advance opposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
What is the PA of the Gluteus Medius?
Ilium, between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
What is the DA of the Gluteus Medius?
Greater trochanter
What is the N for the Gluteus Medius?
Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, & S1)
What is the MA of the Gluteus Minimus?
Abduction of the hip
Anterior fibers medially rotate the hip
Keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advance opposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
What is the PA of the Gluteus Minimus?
Ilium, between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
What is the DA of the Gluteus Minimus?
Greater trochanter
What is the N for the Gluteus Minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, & S1)
What is the MA of the Tensor Fasciae Latae?
Abduction and medial rotation of the hip joint
Keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advance opposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
What is the PA of the Tensor Fasciae Latae?
Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and anterior iliac crest
What is the DA of the Tensor Fasciae Latae?
Iliotibial tract (IT Band), which attaches to Gerdy’s tubercle of the tibia
What is the N for the Tensor Fasciae Latae?
Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, & S1)
What is the MA of the Piriformis?
Lateral rotation of the hip joint when extended
Abduction of the hip joint when flexed
Stabilization of the hip joint
What is the PA of the Piriformis?
Anterior sacrum and sacrotuberous ligament
What is the DA of the Piriformis?
Greater trochanter
What is the N for the Piriformis?
Anterior rami of S1 & S2
What is the MA of the Obturator Internus?
Lateral rotation of the hip joint when extended
Abduction of the hip when flexed
Stabilization of the hip joint
What is the PA of the Obturator Internus?
Pelvic surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones
What is the DA of the Obturator Internus?
Greater trochanter
What is the N for the Obturator Internus?
Nerve to obturator internus (L5 & S1)
What is the MA of the Superior and Inferior Gemelli?
Lateral rotation of the hip joint when extended
Abduction of the hip joint when flexed
Stabilization of the hip joint
What is the PA of the Superior and Inferior Gemelli?
Superior: ischial spine
Inferior: ischial tuberosity
What is the DA of the Superior and Inferior Gemelli?
Greater trochanter
What is the N for the Superior and Inferior Gemelli?
Superior: nerve to obturator internus (L5 & S1)
Inferior: nerve to quadratus femoris (L5 & S1)
What is the MA of the Quadratus Femoris?
Lateral rotation and stabilization of the hip joint
What is the PA of the Quadratus Femoris?
Ischial tuberosity
What is the DA of the Quadratus Femoris?
The quadrate tubercle
What is the N for the Quadratus Femoris?
Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5 & S1)
