Increase blood glucose level by stimulating glycogeuolysis
Unknown mechanism of stabilizing cardiac rhythm in beta blocker overdose
Decrease gastric motility and secretions
Contraindications for Glucagon
Hypersensitivity
Hyperglycemia
Adverse Effects of Glucagon
Dizziness Headache Hypertension Tachycardia Nausea Vomiting Rebound Hypoglycemia
Precautions for Glucagon
Not effective if patient does not have any stored glycogen
Dose & Administration of Glucagon
Adult:
1.0 mg IM, may be repeated in 10 minutes
Ca & Beta Blocker: OD: 3-10 mg SIVP followed by a 3-10 mg/hour infusion
Pedi:
Hypoglycemia: 0.03-0.1 mg/kg IM/IO/SQ/SIVP repeated in 20 minutes.
Ca & Beta Blocker: 0.05-0.15 mg/kg IV/IO over 3-5 minutes
Followed by 0.05-0.10 mg/kg/h infusion
