Inhibits Action of acetylcholine at postganglionic parasympathetic neuroeffector site
Sympathetic control increases heart rate
Contraindications for Atropine Sulfate
Tachycardia
Hypothermic bradycardia
Unstable cardiovascular status with bleeding and myocardial ischemia
Narrow angle glaucoma
Adverse effects of Atropine Sulfate
Drowsiness Confusion Headache Tachycardia palpitations Nausea Vomiting Pupil dilation Dry mouth blurred vision Flushed dry hot skin Paradoxical Bradycardia when given at low doses
Precautions for Atropine Sulfate
Effects are enhanced by antihistamines Procainamide Quinidine Antipsychotics Benzodiazepines Antidepressants
Dose of Atropine Sulfate
Adult: bradycardia 0.5 mg IV every 3-5 minutes as needed not to exceed total of 0.04 mg/kg (max 3mg total)
Pedi: bradycardia 0.02 mg/kg IV/IO (minimum dose of 0.1 mg)
