Glucagon Flashcards
Glucagon (glucagen)
Class
Hyperglycemic (Hormone)
Glucagon (glucagen)
Action
Raises blood glucose levels by stimulating the liver to release glycogen in the form of glucose.
Inhibits synthesis of glycogen from the glucose.
Blocks the antiadrenergic effects of betablockers.
Glucagon (glucagen)
Indication
Unconscious diabetic pt (hypoglycemic), if unable to start IV.
Beta-blocker OD.
Glucagon (glucagen)
Dose/route
Hypoglycemia with no IV= 1mg IM
Beta blocker OD= 1mg IV, MR 1mg IV in 5 min
Glucagon (glucagen)
Peds dose
Same as adult, don’t administer to children under 1 y/o
Glucagon (glucagen)
Onset
5-20 min
Glucagon (glucagen)
Contra
Hypersensitivity to glucagon or protein compounds
Glucagon (glucagen)
Adverse effects
CNS = h/a GI = n/v
Glucagon (glucagen)
Precautions
1) Dextrose 50% is DOC if IV established.
2) Check blood sugar pre-administration.
3) Mix drug powder ONLY w/ solvent provided.
4) Hypersensitivity reaction may occur (glucagon is a protein)
5) Administer cautiously to pts w/ cardiovascular disease (drug has + inotrope & + chronotrope effects)
Glucagon
Supplied
1mg/ml vial.
