Glaucoma Flashcards
Background information for Ophthalmic Prostaglandin Analogs
Glaucoma is the uneven flow of aqueous humor (liquid in the eye) that leads to elevated pressure within the eye that damages the optic nerve leading to blindness
Pharmacology of Ophthalmic Prostaglandin Analogs
Increases the outflow of aqueous humor, thus decreasing pressure within the eye. Prostaglandins are typically associated with inflammation but in the eye, they increase the outflow of aqueous humor
Indications of Ophthalmic Prostaglandin Analogs
- Glaucoma
Side effects of Ophthalmic Prostaglandins Analogs
- Eyelash growth
- Dry eye
- Blurred vision
- Discoloration of the iris
- Inflammation of the eye
Important Note for Ophthalmic Prostaglandins Analogs
- Medication is in the form of eye drops
- Xalatan (Latanoprost) should be stored in the refrigerator until opened. Can be stored at room temp for up to 6 weeks
- Lumigan (Bimatoprost) and Travatan (Travoprost) can be stored at room temp
List the brand names and generic names of Ophthalmic Prostaglandin Analogs
Brand Name: Lumigan, Xalatan, Travatan
Generic Name: Bimatoprost, Latanoprost, Travoprost
What do Ophthalmic Prostaglandin Analogs end with?
“-oprost”
Background information for Ophthalmic Beta-Blockers
Aqueous humor production also contributes to high intraocular pressure
Pharmacology of Ophthalmic Beta-Blockers
Reduce the production of aqueous humor
Indications of Ophthalmic Beta-Blockers
- Glaucoma
Side effects of Ophthalmic Beta-Receptors
- Bradycardia
- Hypotension
- Asthma
- COPD
Drug interactions of Ophthalmic Beta-Blockers
- May increase risk of hypotension and bradycardia when used with other drugs that can lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate

Brand Name: Timoptic, Betoptic S
Generic Name: Timolol, Bextaxolol
