Blood Clots Flashcards
Background information for Anticoagulants
Fibrin is one of the two major components if a blood clot. It forms out of a series of chemical reactions between blood and the chemicals released by a damaged blood vessel.
Pharmacology of Anticoagulants
Block/interfere with chemical reactions that lead to the formation of fibrin
Indications of Anticoagulants
- Prevention/Treatment of blood clots
Side effects of Anticoagulants
- Excessive bleeding
- Easy bruising
Drug interactions of Anticoagulants
Intake of anything rich in vitamin K will interfere with the effect of warfarin
- Increase risk of gastrointestinal bleeding when used with NSAIDs and aspirin
What are the dangers of taking NSAIDs or aspirin with anticoagulants?
This leads to dangerous problems of bleeding
T or F: Warfarin can be used during pregnancy
FALSE
never to be used during pregnancy
Background information for Antiplatelets
Platelets are one of two key components of a blood clot. They aggregate around damaged blood vessels and form a plug
Pharmacology of Antiplatelets
Prevent/interfere with platelet aggregation
Indications of Antiplatelets
- Prevention or treatment of blood clots
Side effects of Antiplatelets
- Excessive bleeding
- Easy bruising
What are the dangers of taking NSAIDs or aspirin and Antiplatelets?
This may lead to excessive bleeding
