Anxiety Flashcards
Background information for Benzodiazepines
There are two benzodiazepine receptor subtypes, BNZ1 and BNZ2. BNZ1 receptor activation promotes sleep. BNZ2 receptor activation promotes muscle relaxation
Pharmacology of Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines bind to benzodiazepine receptors and enhance the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system. These effects can be useful in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, seizures, and other conditions
Indications of Benzodiazepines
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Agitation
- Seizures
- Muscle spasms
- Alcohol withdrawal
Side effects of Benzodiazepines
- Drowsiness
- Somnolence (strong desire to fall asleep)
- Dependency
Drug interactions of Benzodiazepines
- Increased drowsiness when used with other drugs that suppress the central nervous system
