glands/membrane Flashcards
function of glands
produce secretions and excretions
exocrine vs endocrine
endo into bloodstrem, exo into ducts to body surface
merocrine glands
exocytosis; cells remain intact
apocrine secretion
apical portion of cell is released
holocrine secretion
cell is destroyed and becomes part of secretion
cutaneous membrane
dry, protective membrane
made of keratinized cells
mucous membrane
lines body cavities that open to the outside world (stratified squamous/simple columar)
serous membrane
lines body cavities that do not open to outside world (pleurae)
–> simple squamous
synovial membrane
lines joint capsules
eccrine gland (merocrine)
produces sweat (exocrine)
–> on forehead, hands, feet
apocrine gland
sweat includes organic compound bc hormones (endocrine)
–> on dense pubic hairy areas
sebaceous glands
opens in hair follicle and produces oily substance called sebum
ceruminous glands
produces ear wax which waterproofs canal and prevents particles from entering by sticking to hair
–> modified apocrine
mammary gland
produces breastmilk thorough ducts (only during pregnancy)
–> modified apocrine
